Lecture 265 of the Foreign Languages and Culture Forum, themed "Classroom-Based Qualitative Research (CBQR): Methodological Prospects and Possibilities", was held on the afternoon of September 26, 2024 at iHarbour.

Professor Peter I. De Costa from Michigan State University was invited to discuss cutting-edge topics in second language acquisition (SLA) with SFS faculty and students.

Professor De Costa, Director of the TESOL Master's program and core faculty in the Second Language Studies Doctoral Program, has a strong academic background in linguistics, language, and culture. Drawing on his expertise, he delved into classroom interaction in SLA and its impact on language development.

Professor De Costa also addressed crucial issues in qualitative research, such as research quality and researcher reflexivity. He proposed practical strategies for enhancing research quality and reliability, including using mixed research methods and emphasizing ethical considerations throughout the research process.

The lecture provided attendees with a theoretical framework and sparked critical reflection on the application of qualitative research methods in SLA, helping them gain a more comprehensive understanding of this complex academic topic.

The lecture concluded with a dynamic Q&A session, during which students raised questions on cross-cultural communication and the role of emotions in language learning. Professor De Costa emphasized the importance of translating qualitative frameworks into practical teaching while encouraging attendees to actively explore the frontiers of language education.
