The Center for Graduate Studies in Foreign Languages (CGSFL) was founded in 2000. It mainly undertakes the education and administration of PhD students in Systematics of Language and Culture and MA students majoring in Foreign Languages and Literatures, the nomination of supervisors, as well as the development and construction of the academic discipline.
Systematics of Language and Culture,the interdisciplinary doctoral program, includes four research orientations: Studies in Language Systems and Language Acquisition, Translation Studies in Complex Systems Theory, Studies of Literary Texts in Dynamic Complex Systems, and Analysis and Research on International Affairs and Public Opinion.
Foreign Languages and Literatures, the first-level-discipline MA program, consists of five research orientations: Linguistics and Applied Linguistics, .English Language and Literature, Japanese Language and Literature, International and Area Studies, Comparative Literatures and Intercultural Studies.
The center currently has 16 doctoral supervisors and 33 master supervisors, including 18 professors, 1 "Changjiang Lecture Professor" and 3 "Qingba" talents. Among the supervisors, 29 hold doctoral degrees. Apart from teaching postgraduate students and supervising MA and PhD dissertations, the faculty have carried out academic research and made achievements in areas such as discourse analysis, second language acquisition, foreign language teaching, fuzzy linguistics, cross-culture studies, translation studies, ESP, lexicography, and foreign literatures. In the past five years, the faculty have won 18 national projects, including National Key Research and Development Program and key project supported by National Social Science Fund. At the same time, they published more than 80 monographs in famous presses home and abroad, and about 200 papers in international renowned journals and CSSCI journals. In addition, 36 decision-making recommendations have been adopted by the state and provincial departments.
With an annual intake of 5-8 doctoral students and 16-20 master students, the center currently has 40 full-time doctoral students and 57 master students. Adhering to the objective of "solid foundation, superior method, strong ability and full potential", the center aims to cultivate top talents with international academic vision and innovation consciousness, solid theoretical foundation of foreign languages and literatures and interdisciplinary research, and proficient in interdisciplinary research methods. Based on talent cultivation mode of "conduct cultivation, knowledge teaching, ability cultivation and thinking innovation", preferable achievements have been made in talent cultivation: in 2020 and 2021 alone, the doctor and master students participated in 47 national and provincial projects, published 33 high-level papers in SSCI and CSSCI journals, and submitted 30 decision-making recommendations which turned out to be adopted by the state and provincial departments. In both years, the employment rate is 100%.
