On May 9, 2025, SFS hosted Lecture 277 of the "Foreign Language and Culture Forum" and the 29th lecture of the Corpus Linguistics Masterclass Series. This lecture, titled "The EMI Corpus of Student Academic Writing: A new resource in EAP materials design", invited Dr. Dana Gablasova (Senior Lecturer, Lancaster University; ESRC-CASS Key Member) as the keynote speaker. Prof. Tony McEnery (Distinguished Professor, Lancaster University; FBA; Visiting Professor, XJTU) participated in the dialogue session. The forum was chaired by Prof. Yang Ruiying.

In the dialogue segment, experts discussed corpus research methods and the application of corpora to EAP teaching materials design. During the keynote lecture, Dr. Gablasova detailed the development process of the EMI Corpus, including challenges and solutions, demonstrated the analysis of linguistic needs in EMI student writing and reading across China, Italy, Thailand, and the UK, and explained how to use corpus data to enhance the effectiveness, relevance, and authenticity of EAP materials in EMI contexts. At the Q&A session, Dr. Gablasova and Prof. McEnery addressed topics including corpus access, selection criteria, and AI tools in academic writing.

The forum demonstrated the value of corpora in analyzing academic writing and developing teaching resources, offering new approaches for their application in English teaching.
