On the afternoon of 27th, 2014, foreign teacher of Russian Department, Alexandrov Valentina gave a lecture on the topic “Russian Idioms with City Names（Фразеологизмы с Названиями Городов в Русском Языке）”, which deepened students’ understanding of Russian culture with the collision of different cultures.
Before the lecture, Director Nie, on behalf of MTI Education Center of School of Foreign Studies, Xi’an Jiaotong University, extended warm welcome to Mr. Zhang and his counterparts who came all the way here. He also briefly introduced RWS Group, Beijing Ruwensi Company and Mr. Zhang as well. After that, the lecture came to start. Talking from confusions into the workshop with vivid language, Zhang opened a wonderful blueprint for the RWS-XJTU Workshop. Combining the “confusion”, one exerted from students posing to teachers for answers, with the classic saying “ To be or not to be” in William Shakespeare’s Sonnet 14, several lines from a famous Chinese singer Liu Huan, and the brand of Mcdonald, Zhang inspired everyone present to think about translation professionalism and the language service industry. Then he explained the confusion to all the students with three Chinese ancient items “the right time”, “the right place” and “”the right company” which are the ancient wisdom from Lao Tse’ s Tao-te Ching. When it comes to “the right time”, supported by his abundant managerial experience of companies, Zhang pointed out that job-hunters must find a company that owned the feature of globalization, specification and innovation so as to seek broader space for individual development. Speaking of “the right place”, he emphasized that everyone should have qualities like “communication”, “accommodation” and “adaptation”. As for the last item, he advised all the students focus on three things: The first is to maintain a harmony in mind, keep strong both in body and mind; the second to be compatible in community, which required students to locate a suitable site and to be incorporated into society. Last but not least, he brought the core entrepreneurship “Knowledge, Capability, Attitude” to all students, expecting them to have a bright future. Afterwards, Tang Yuping, Gu Xiaodong, Wang Jiaojiao had immediate exchange with Mr. Zhang regarding their confusions during the lecture.
After the lecture was over, Director Nie made some comments for summary. He pointed out that Zhang’s lecture was vivid, fantastic and market-oriented, featured by efficient interaction and participation, which also greatly facilitated students’ professional career planning. Currently, MTI Education Center is going to carry out an in-depth cooperation which would further improve the main contents and details of the project so that a translation workshop and practice base could be built. Meanwhile, he also expressed his hoped that all students in MTI Education Center could make preparation in advance for thoughts and careers. Besides that, he highlighted efforts must be made to practice translation competence, improve pressure-dealing and ability, stepping towards a talent of translation well versed in both leadership skills and Chinese and western knowledge.
