The Third Conference on Sociocultural Theory and Foreign Language Education, hosted by the Second Language Acquisition Committee of China Association for Comparative Studies of English and Chinese (CACSEC), was held at Guangdong University of Foreign Studies (GDUFS) from May 17 to 19, 2024.
Undertaken by the School of English Education (SEE) of GDUFS, and co-organized by the School of Foreign Studies (SFS) of Xi'an Jiaotong University (home to Lantolf Second Language Research Center) and other institutions, the event drew a large number of scholars, including XJTU's Professor Meng Yaru, Researcher Gao Yang, and Professor Qian Xi, who together led a delegation comprising postgraduate students and visiting scholars of SFS.
During the conference, Professor Meng Yaru and Researcher Gao Yang respectively organized featured forums titled "Dynamic Assessment Based on Sociocultural Theory and Research on the Emotional and Identity Development of Foreign Language Teachers from the Perspective of Sociocultural Theory". Other notable contributions emerged from the delegation: Dr. Zhang Yanhua presented her study on university foreign language instructors' research identity development through experiential narratives, while PhD student Wang Xiaochen presented his investigation which revealed critical correlations between secondary school teachers' self-efficacy and occupational well-being in China's educational ecosystem.
Professor Meng and Dr. Zhang also participated in the featured forum "Sociocultural Theory, SLA, and James Lantolf" convened by Professor Wen Zhisheng of Hong Kong Shue Yan University. Their presentations highlighted Professor Lantolf's pivotal contributions to advancing sociocultural theory research in China's second language acquisition studies.
